156th Annual Perry County Fair
History of the Fair
The Perry County Fair started in the fall of 1856 in the court house. It was then, a one day event, held in an upstairs court room. Since culinary items had not yet been added to the fair, it was mostly fancy work and farming displays for all the see. The next year, it was moved to the current location at the Perry County Fairgrounds. In years past,t he fair would start with a parade that began at the courthouse and ended at the fairgrounds. It was the event of the year! People would come from miles around to show off their live stock and race horses. In the speed ring, most of the horsed went under saddle in trotting and pacing matches. Ladies made up the largest percentage of horsemanship in these times.
The Queen pageant began in 1959, with Little Miss Perry County being added in the early 1970's. Junior Miss competition was not added until 2000.
Today, the Perry County Fair is the oldest continuous running fair in Illinois. Some fairs are older, but didn't have an active fair during the Depression years. Somehow, Pinckneyville managed to keep theirs going during those dark years.
Today, the fair consists of a full culinary department, horticulture department, dairy, sheep, beef, and horse shows. There is also a variety of events and show options for the junior department.
